Met Office issues thunderstorm warning for all of Wales

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in Wales this weekend. Wales is expected to see daytime temperatures of between 21 to 23 degrees on Saturday and Sunday according to the forecaster, making it one of the warmest weekends of the year so far.

But whilst many places will be largely dry, thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail are likely to develop in some places on Saturday afternoon. On Thursday morning, the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for all of Wales and parts of England. It runs from 2pm on Saturday until 9pm.

The forecaster states: "High temperatures developing across parts of England and Wales on Saturday are expected to trigger a scattering of showers across this area, some of which are likely to be torrential and thundery, bringing 30-40mm in an hour.

"The odd place affected by multiple showers could see more than this, perhaps in excess of 60mm. As well as rain, hail, strong gusts of wind, and lightning will be additional hazards. Despite all of this, many places in the warning area will remain dry, or only see small amounts of rain, due to the well scattered nature of the heaviest showers."

The affected areas include every county in Wales. The yellow weather warning is in place from 2pm until 9pm on Saturday, June 10. The forecaster has warned that there is a small chance that homes and business could be flooded quickly due to the weather warning, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds. Additionally, spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures, and where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and possibly even cancellations to rail services. There is also a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be temporarily lost.

According to the Met Office, the unsettled weather stems from a warm plume of air from the south, which has raised temperatures and is set to introduce some thundery showers. The high pressure area which has been responsible for the last couple of weeks of settled weather for much of the UK will drift away towards Scandinavia, allowing a plume of warm air from the south to influence the weekend weather for much of the UK.
