A new weather warning for a large part of Wales has been issued for this weekend as temperatures are set to drop to as low as -11C on Friday night. The yellow alert for ice is in place from 9.30am on Friday until 10am on Saturday.
Many parts of the country have woken up to heavy snow on Friday morning but the snow is set to clear throughout the day to leave a sunny afternoon and cold night. There are concerns that melting snow will cause icy conditions across large parts of the country overnight.
The warning says: "Whilst falling snow will clear from the south and east of the warning area in the next few hours, lying snow and ice will likely continue to be a hazard through the rest of this morning. Icy stretches should become confined to higher ground this afternoon, before temperatures fall below freezing widely this evening. This will lead to untreated surfaces left wet by snow melt becoming icy at all levels, with some disruption to travel likely."
Forecasters are warning that temperatures in Wales could fall to -11°C tonight as the cold snap continues.
Traffic was brought to a standstill on the M62 in the early hours of Friday morning due to the heavy snow in the area, and parts of the A55 in north Wales were impassable. Live updates on the weather throughout the day here.
An amber warning for snow and ice was in place over parts of mid and north Wales until 9am on Friday, that has now been replaced with the yellow warning.
The areas of Wales covered by the warning are:
- Carmarthenshire
- Ceredigion
- Conwy
- Denbighshire
- Flintshire
- Gwynedd
- Monmouthshire
- Neath Port Talbot
- Powys
- Wrexham
Friday's Met Office forecast for Wales says: "Overnight rain, sleet, and snow gradually clears through the early hours leaving a much drier and brighter day though still the odd snow flurry is possible. Breezy to start but winds gradually easing. A chilly day, particularly in the breeze. Maximum temperature 6 °C."
