The Met Office has issued an urgent yellow weather warning as thunderstorms are set to hit the city.
The warning started at 11.30pm today (Thursday, May 11) and initially included parts of London, Peterborough, Manchester, Leeds and Middlesbrough. At around 3.30pm the warning was updated and now includes the North West including Liverpool, Wirral, Cheshire and Lancashire.
The Met Office said people in the city should expect heavy showers and thunderstorms until 7pm tonight. They also warned people there would "likely" to be travel disruption and flooding.

The Met Office said: "Showers could be heavy and slow moving, carrying the risk of hail and thunder. Light winds and feeling pleasant in the best of any sunshine. Daytime showers [are] soon easing during the evening to leave clear spells overnight. Light winds allowing some patchy mist and fog to form in prone spots, and a slightly cooler night."
The forecast for Liverpool says that there will be a 10% chance of rain at 5pm , with will go down to below 5% from 10pm.
The weather warning adds that people should expect:
- There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus
- Delays to train services are possible
- Perhaps damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes
- Some flooding of a few homes and businesses likely, leading to some damage to buildings or structures
- Some short term loss of power and other services is likely
