Met Office issue new rain weather warning for parts of UK with multiple flood alerts in place

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain for Greater Manchester - as multiple flood alerts remain in place.

The warning - which covers most of our region as well as parts of Lancashire, Merseyside, Wales and the South West - will come into place at 9pm tonight (Friday) and will last until 12pm tomorrow. Forecasters predict that heavy rain will 'bring the chance of some flooding and disruption'.

The Met Office has warned that in areas covered by the warning, flooding of a few homes and business 'is likely'. Bus and train services are expected to be affected by the weather, with problems on the roads also predicted.

The alert comes just days after another yellow warning for heavy rain was issued in our region. Torrential showers fell over Greater Manchester for several days, leading to flooding on some local roads with cars left submerged underway and motorways closed off.

Gardens were left submerged underwater and some trains were also halted or forced to run at reduced speeds, causing further delays. A flood alert issued by the Environment Agency remains in place for the Upper River Douglas, which covers areas including Wigan and Standish.

People who live nearby have been warned that 'flooding is possible' - so to 'be prepared'. Local residents are being advised to avoid low lying footpaths or entering areas prone to flooding while the alert remains in place.

A flood alert also remains in place for the River Bollin, just over the border in Cheshire, which includes parts of Knutsford, Wilmslow, Macclesfield and Bollington. According to forecasters, the heavy rain is set to start falling in Greater Manchester from around 9pm tonight.

The showers are expected to last until at least 7am tomorrow. Lighters showers are then forecast throughout Saturday morning, before the weather changes to cloudy in the afternoon.
