Met Office forecasts heavy rain and gales for North East ahead of New Year

The cold snap may be over but the North East is set to be battered by yet more adverse weather as torrential rain and gales hit the region.

We have not yet had a warning issued by the Met Office, but weather experts are forecasting heavy rain for the next few days.

Cloud has been thickening this morning (December 28) with bursts of rain forecast until the early evening, when the winds will start to pick up. Temperatures will reach a maximum of 10C.

Into tonight we’ll see spells of heavy rainfall with large gusts of wind, as temperatures fall to a chilly 3C.

Thursday is going to be very windy with gales at times, and a mixture of sunny spells and showers, meaning it’ll feel particularly cold in the wind, with temperatures struggling to breach 5C.

The forecast for Friday looks unsettled with showers and winds persisting before calming down for New Year’s Eve on Saturday to make way for sunny spells and a light breeze.
