Met Office forecast for weekend as Belfast set to see thunder and lightening

Northern Ireland has been spoiled over the last few weeks with glorious summer weather - but this weekend doesn't look too fresh.

Temperatures have soared close to 30C in most parts of the region lately, with plenty taking to our local parks and beaches to soak up every last bit of sun. Looking at the forecast for this weekend, June 17 and 18, it's a different picture.

The Met Office says "unsettled conditions are to come, as the warm weather continues".

Here is the weather forecast for the next few days, according to the Met Office:

Saturday, June 17

Showers clear north with the late morning becoming mostly dry with sunny spells. Scattered showers then build again during the afternoon. Maximum temperature 21C.

From 11am through to midday, there is a thunder and lightening forecast. Temperatures will be around 17C at this time.

Sunday, June 18

It will become "somewhat more unsettled" with a few showers, locally heavy Sunday afternoon. Overcast changing to sunny intervals by late morning. Highs of 21C.

Monday, June 19

Cloudy changing to light showers by late morning.

Tuesday, June 20

Sunny intervals changing to light showers by late morning.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Steven Keates said: “Over the coming days we’ll be transitioning to a more unsettled regime for the UK, though temperatures will remain high and it’ll feel very humid for many.

"Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to become more frequent through the weekend, with the potential for associated hail, lightning and some gusty winds. While the focus of thundery showers on Friday afternoon will be Northern Ireland, that risk spreads more widely across western and southern areas of the UK on Saturday, before pushing further north on Sunday.

"As in many of these situations, these showers can be hit or miss, with some places avoiding them whilst other areas nearby may see some very wet conditions.

"There’s an ongoing likelihood of warnings being issued in the coming days, so keep an eye on the weather forecast for the latest outlook."
