Met Office confirms yet another warm month as September temperatures hit 28.1C

  • The UK has recorded its joint-fourth warmest September on record, matching temperature figures from 1949 and 2016 according to Met Office data.
  • Temperatures reached a high of 28.1C on 29 September, though overall figures were roughly 2C cooler than the record-breaking Septembers of 2006 and 2023.
  • Climate scientists emphasised that the persistent warmth aligns with a broader trend of increasingly frequent above-average temperatures driven by climate change.
  • The Environment Agency warned that despite recent rain, ongoing water deficits mean drought conditions remain severe across parts of England.
  • Forecasters anticipate cooler and more unsettled weather towards the end of the year, potentially influenced by a strong El Nino phenomenon.
