UPDATE, AUGUST 31: John Galliano: Horizons, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s planned Spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition, is no longer happening. The news comes just one month after the exhibition was announced—and after weeks of conversation about what it meant for the Met to put Galliano at the center of fashion’s biggest night.
The choice was complicated from the start. Galliano remains one of the most influential designers of his generation, but his career is also inseparable from the antisemitic, racist, and anti-Asian remarks he made in 2010 and 2011. The Met had planned to address that history directly in the exhibition, looking at his creative legacy alongside questions of accountability. More recently, another issue emerged: May 3, 2027, the first Monday in May and the traditional date of the Met Gala, falls on Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day.
