Met Gala season is nearly upon us and this year's theme of Gilded Glamour and White Tie is sure to provide some of the most opulent, lavish and over-the-top looks we've ever seen.
The first Met Gala took place in 1948 and ever since then the annual fundraising event has created some of fashion's most iconic moments.
A-listers' avant-garde costumes cause a stir every year; whether it be feathery frocks or insane trains, there’s always something to talk about when it comes to Met Gala fashion.
Ahead of this year’s gala on May 2 we've rounded up some of the wildest and most iconic looks throughout the Met Gala's history.
Katy Perry, 2018
In 2018 Katy Perry showed onlookers that she knows how to stick to a theme.
The singer, who is known for her outlandish style, arrived at the Met Gala dressed as an angel for the "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" themed year.
Katy Perry, 2019
Katy Perry's Met Gala style is so extravagant that it was impossible not to include her in this list more than once.
In 2019 Katy Perry continued her stint in the Met Gala spotlight as she illuminated the red carpet dressed as a human chandelier.
The singer honoured 2019's camp theme with a silver Moschino dress and three layers of candles.
Billy Porter, 2019
Another winged look to come out of the Met Gala was Billy Porter's 2019 costume.
The actor and singer came dressed as a winged Egyptian pharaoh, lavishly gilded in gold, and was even carried into the event by shirtless attendants.
Rihanna, 2015
Rihanna's 2015 look earned her the unofficial title of Met Gala Queen as she took to the red carpet in a flamboyant yellow dress by Chinese designer Guo Pei that featured an enormous train.
The pop star later confessed to Access Hollywood that she "felt like a clown" in the outfit and was worried that people were going to laugh at her.
The iconic look did become a viral meme, being compared to pizza and a giant omelette, but it also earned her the title of best dressed at the Met Gala that year.
Janelle Monáe, 2019
Janelle Monáe wore this eye-catching look for the 2019 Met Gala.
The musician opted for a custom Christian Siriano dress that featured a motorised blinking eye. The dress was inspired by one of Monáe's favourite artists, Picasso.
Liv Tyler and Stella McCartney, 1999
Liz Tyler and Stella McCartney perfected the "Rock Style" theme of the 1999 Met Gala.
The actress and designer attended their first ever Met Gala together and wore matching DIY "Rock Royalty" tanks, creating a truly iconic Met Gala moment.
Beyoncé, 2015
In 2015 Beyoncé shocked people with a risque sheer Givenchy gown adorned with crystal beading.
The singer's look divided critics, with many loving the jaw-dropping ensemble while others questioned how well it fit that year's theme - "China: Through the Looking Glass."
Sarah Jessica Parker and Alexander McQueen, 2006
In 2006 Sarah Jessica Parker and Alexander McQueen celebrated the theme “AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion” by wearing matching tartan looks designed by McQueen himself.
In a short film for Vogue, the Sex And The City star recently looked back on her 2006 Met Gala look with McQueen. Speaking about the late designer she said: "I was in love with him."
