Met Eireann warns of 'sharp and severe' change this week as snow timeline revealed

Met Eireann’s forecast for the remainder of the week consists of several weather warnings and an advisory in place as brutally cold conditions arrive along with some snow.

The weather advisory spanning the week reads: “Very cold into early next week as an Arctic airmass sets in, bringing sharp to severe frosts, and ice or black ice on roads and footpaths. Some showers of hail, sleet, and snow will occur.

“Potential for freezing fog too, especially this weekend. Further updates to the advisory and warnings are expected in the coming days.”

Meanwhile, there is a status yellow ice warning in place nationwide until 12pm on Thursday with the Irish forecaster cautioning the public over "hazardous conditions".

It states that: "A band of wintry precipitation will sink southwards with the potential for black ice/freezing rain on surfaces."

There is also a status yellow low temperature warning in place from 10pm Thursday until 10am Friday due to "a sharp to severe frost with icy surfaces, as temperatures widely fall to -4C.

There will be an icy start to Thursday with black ice and patches of freezing fog leading to hazardous travel conditions.

Well scattered showers will continue to sink southwards this morning, turning wintry in parts with a light dusting of snow on some lower levels.

Sunny spells will follow, as wintry showers become confined to northern coastal counties. However, after-dark showers of sleet and snow will move into parts of the east.

Much of the country will be dry on Friday with low winter sunshine but it will be very cold with icy stretches, some lying snow, as well as freezing fog in parts. Lowest temperatures of -5C to 0C in light westerly or variable breezes.

Wintry showers will affect some northern and western coastal counties, and it will possibly be thundery near the coast. Highest temperatures ranging from 0 to 4C are expected, in light northwest or variable breezes.

A widespread sharp to severe frost will set in along with icy stretches. While many areas will be dry, some showers of hail and snow will affect Atlantic coastal counties, but falling as rain near the coast.

Saturday will be generally dry with low winter sunshine but isolated wintry showers will occur too. Frost and ice will be lingering in unsheltered areas, along with some patches of freezing fog. Highest temperatures of just -1 to +4C is expected, in light northwesterly breezes.

Sunday will see temperatures struggling to rise above freezing for most with frost, ice and freezing fog persisting throughout the day.

It will be mainly dry apart from isolated showers in some coastal margins and highest temperatures of -2 to +2 degrees are expected in light, variable breezes.

Widespread frost and ice overnight with lows ranging from -6 to -2C is due with wintry showers of sleet and snow moving in closer to the Atlantic coast.

As for next week, the forecaster says: “The cold weather is likely to continue but uncertainty in the fine details at this stage.”
