Met Eireann has warned of biter conditions this evening, particularly in northern counties as the current cold snap looks set to worsen over the coming days.
“Very hazardous driving conditions” are expected as temperatures drop to -6C with widespread sharp to severe frost and icy conditions.
It will remain dry in most areas tonight, with just isolated wintry showers in light to moderate easterly breezes.

It will continue to be very cold on Tuesday with freezing fog patches over the northern half of the country during the morning.
Frost and ice will persist through much of the day and it will be mostly cloudy in the southern half of the country with rain pushing into the southwest - falling as sleet or snow in places away from the coast.
It will be dry for most areas, with brighter conditions in the north and daytime temperatures will range from -1 to +4 degrees in light to moderate northeasterly winds, fresher in the southwest.
Tuesday night will be very cold but generally dry with a chance of isolated wintry showers near coasts. Widespread frost and ice are expected with minimum temperatures of -5 to +1 degrees.
On Wednesday things will be generally dry with a good deal of crisp winter sunshine and a chance of isolated wintry showers near coasts. Highest temperatures will range from 1 to 5 degrees in mainly light northerly breezes.
On Wednesday night, temperatures will plunge down to -6C once again.
Thursday will be largely dry and bright with afternoon temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees and some occasional wintry showers continuing in the north and northwest.
Friday will see the arrival of showers of rain and sleet - becoming slightly more widespread on that afternoon, although much of the midlands, south, and east will remain dry.
It’ll be partly cloudy with occasional bright spells and highest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees in light southwesterly breezes.
As for weekend predictions, the forecaster currently says there is “considerable uncertainty for the weekend and into next week. Early indications are that conditions will turn somewhat warmer but very unsettled on Sunday with some prolonged spells of rain.”
