Met Eireann warns of dramatic weather shift after bank holiday weekend heat surge

Ireland is set for a dramatic weather twist as more hot weather is set to be followed by excessive rain.

The country has been engulfed in ‘mini-heatwave’ conditions since last week and the stunning weather is forecast to continue over the June bank holiday and right through the first week of June.

Temperatures have been hitting 25C at times alongside wall-to-wall sunshine - and some weather maps show thermometers creeping towards 30C in some areas as we head into the long weekend.

Ireland can expect at least another week of glorious weather, but Met Eireann has warned the current spell will only be temporary.

They said that from mid-June, “a change to more unsettled conditions looks likely” and it may “average out slightly wetter than normal”.

Its monthly forecast for the week of June 16 until June 22 reads: “A change to more unsettled conditions looks likely at this stage as low pressure has more of an influence and the upper air becomes more unstable. In fact, it looks probably that it will average out slightly wetter than normal. Overall it looks like temperatures will be marginally above normal in most areas, especially in the southwest of the country”.

There’s more bad news for the last week of June, with its forecast for June 23 to June 29 reading: “Confidence is low at this stage. There is a weak signal that it will be slightly wetter than average and still slightly warmer than usual for late June. Pressure is likely to be low in the near Atlantic which will bring in some showers at times.”

Meanwhile, in its seasonal outlook for June, July and August, the national forecaster predicted: “The wettest part of the season is signalled for June, with July and August drier overall.”

But in the meantime, the warm, dry and sunny spell is forecast to continue for at least another week.

Giving a day-by-day breakdown of what to expect over the next few days, Met Eireann said: “Mostly sunny and dry Thursday however a little cloud will build at times across parts of Ulster and Leinster. Highs today of 19C to 25C with the warmest temperatures in the west. A light easterly breeze will keep it a little cooler along eastern coasts.

“Warm and sunny for Friday outside of some possible cloud building across Ulster. Highest temperatures of 18C to 24C or 25C, all the while a little cooler though along Irish Sea coasts. Winds will be light to moderate northeast or variable.

“Another largely sunny and dry day with just scattered cloud. Somewhat cloudy to begin in northern parts, clearing in the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 18C to 24C, with just light easterly or variable winds.

“A clear sunny start to Sunday with variable cloud possibly developing over the western half of the country later on in the day, before clearing again in the late evening. Highest temperatures of 18C to 25C with just light easterly or variable winds.

“Little change is expected early next week with high pressure positioned near Ireland bringing a continuation of the sunny settled weather. Afternoon highs will generally range from 18C to 25C, warmest further west, away from Irish Sea coasts in mostly light easterly breezes.”
