Met Eireann has warned “cyclonic” winds are on the way, with Ireland in for a spell of “very unsettled” weather that could last for most of September.
The national forecaster says the dry and sunny conditions the country has been enjoying will come to a crashing end this weekend as low pressure takes hold.
A weather advisory for the entire country has been issued from 7pm Friday until 7pm Monday.

It reads: “Wet and windy weather this weekend may cause disruption.”
While wet weather is forecast across the weekend and into next week, Met Eireann notes that there is “still some uncertainty about the extent of how windy it may get on Saturday night and Sunday”.
It has currently forecast “blustery” conditions for Saturday and “gusty cyclonic variable winds” for Sunday.
Its forecast for Friday reads: “Friday morning will begin mostly cloudy with scattered showers in the east. A band of rain will reach the west coast by afternoon, with brighter conditions through the middle of the country. Highest temperatures of 17C to 22C, in light variable breezes.”
Looking ahead to Saturday, it says: “It will be a cloudy start on Saturday morning with rain persisting in part of Ulster and Leinster throughout the day, but sunny spells and showers push in to the south and west. Highest temperatures of 14C to 18C in light to moderate southeast or variable winds.
“While there is still some uncertainty about the extent of how windy it may get on Saturday night and Sunday, generally it looks like wet and blustery conditions will extend from the south across the country on Saturday night with some heavy falls of rain at times. Lowest temperatures of 8C to 13C generally as fresh and gusty southeasterly winds veer southwesterly later. Although it should be noted that winds may be stronger locally.”
Sunday’s forecast reads: “Rain, heavy at times will gradually clear northwards on Sunday morning, followed by sunny spells and a few showers in the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 15C to 20C, warmest in the east, with fresh to strong and gusty cyclonic variable winds will become southerly and moderate during the afternoon.
“Wet and blustery conditions will return on Sunday night clearing to showers from the south by morning. Remaining mild with temperatures holding above 10C to 15C generally in moderate to fresh and gusty east to southeast winds.”
Giving its early outlook for next week, the meteorological service said: “Low pressure will remain, dominating the weather for the rest of the week over Ireland with further blustery showers or longer spells of rain at times and highs in the upper teens.”
The low pressure system bringing the miserable weather conditions could last for most of September.
In its long-range monthly forecast, which is subject to change, Met Eireann says it could stay with us until September 23.
For the week of Friday, September 2 to Thursday September 8: “Low pressure is set to dominate Ireland’s weather throughout all of Week 1, maintaining very unsettled conditions across the country. Rainfall amounts will be substantially above average in all areas, particularly in the south, as a number of weather fronts pass over the country. Temperatures will remain around or marginally above average for the time of year.”
For the week of Friday, September 9 to Thursday, September 15: “Low pressure is expected to continue dominating our weather into Week 2, though it will be less pronounced than in Week 1. Precipitation amounts will decrease, becoming close to average for the time of year. It may stay a little drier than average towards the northwest of the country and a little wetter than average towards the southeast. Temperatures across the country are expected to remain around or marginally above normal.”
For the week of Friday, September 16 to Thursday, September 22: “Early indications for Week 3 are that predominantly low pressure will remain in place over Ireland. Precipitation amounts are forecast to be slightly greater than average, with temperatures also remaining slightly above average.”
"Considerable uncertainty" remains for the week of Friday, September 23 to Thursday, September 29.
Met Eireann says: "Early signs are that pressure and temperature will be close to average for the time of year. Rainfall amounts are forecast to decrease, becoming slightly drier than average in most areas."
