Met Eireann updates weather warning for several areas as brutal 'gale force' winds arrive

Met Eireann has published an updated status yellow warning in place from tonight into Wednesday afternoon as brutal conditions approach.

According to the Irish forecasters, a number of coastal counties could experience the effects of strong gale force winds as “south to southwest winds reach gale force 8 or strong gale force 9 at times on Irish coastal waters.”

The alert in place from Valentia to Erris Head to Malin Head will be in effect from 3:00 am tonight until 4:00 pm on Wednesday.

As well as this, it warns that “southerly winds will reach gale force 8 on Irish coastal waters from Belfast Lough to Howth Head to Carnsore Point and on the Irish Sea.”

This caution will come into effect at 5:00 am tomorrow morning and will remain in place until 9:00 am the same day.

Meanwhile, today there is a status yellow rain warning in place for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, and Waterford.

The weather experts warned of “heavy rain at times this evening and early tonight with spot flooding possible.” This is in place until 11:30 pm tonight.

The general forecast predicts persistent rain developing in the south and spreading northwards this evening. It will be heavy at times, especially in the southeast.

Early tonight, this rain will continue to spread northwards and will clear with showers following - some of the showers will be heavy overnight with a possibility of hail and isolated thunderstorms.

Wednesday will be another blustery day with scattered showers extending across the country - some of which will be heavy.

There will be some sunny spells in the east and highest temperatures of 16 degrees in moderate to fresh and gusty southwest winds.

As for the rest of the week, Met Eireann says it will be “rather mild,” but that it may “become quite wet at times, especially on southern and western fringes.”
