Met Eireann snow verdict as Ireland forecast to be as cold as Iceland amid freezing polar snap

Ireland is set for a dramatic weather U-turn with temperatures going from being as warm as Madrid to as cold as Iceland.

After a week of unseasonably warm weather which saw Met Eireann record the warmest November night since records began, a biting polar blast is set to grip the country.

Overnight temperatures this week are forecast to plummet below freezing, with widespread frost likely at times.

While daytime temperatures of between 6C and 11C will make the country feel as cold as Iceland, where similar temperatures are forecast.

Some long-range weather maps - which are subject to change - show snow possible for some areas of Ireland.

However Met Eireann has given its verdict, with its latest forecast showing no sign of the white stuff falling.

Looking ahead to the rest of the week, the national forecaster continued: “Tomorrow morning will be mostly dry with sunny spells and isolated showers, however fog may be slow to clear from some areas. It will become cloudier in the afternoon and rain will develop in Munster and south Leinster, with scattered showers developing elsewhere. The rain will spread further north over Leinster during the evening. Highest temperatures of 7C to 11C, with light to moderate southerly winds gradually becoming northerly and freshening in the south.

“Rain continuing in the south and southeast tomorrow night, gradually clearing into the Irish Sea overnight. Dry and clear spells elsewhere with scattered showers. Light to moderate northerly winds, possible windier in the east and southeast. Lowest temperatures generally between 1C and 5C.

“A mixed day on Thursday of sunny spells and occasional showers for most areas. Cloudier however in Ulster with rain in the northeast. Highest temperatures of 8C to 11C. Moderate westerly winds, fresher near coasts.

“Lingering cloud and rain will eventually clear the northeast with clear spells across the country, and scattered showers in Atlantic counties. Light to moderate westerly breezes. Lowest temperatures of 2C to 6C.”

It’s due to turn even colder by the weekend.

The meteorological service said: “Good sunny spells on Friday with passing showers, driest in the east of the country. Light to moderate southwest breezes. Feeling chilly with afternoon highs of 6C to 9C.

“Friday night will be cold with a widespread frost likely in largely calm and clear conditions. Lowest temperatures of -1C to +3C.

“Becoming very breezy or windy on Saturday in strengthening southerly winds with a spell of persistent rain developing. Highs of 7C to 11C. Becoming drier Saturday night as winds ease and clear spells and occasional showers develop.
