Met Eireann snow map shows exactly where and when it will fall as icy -4C Arctic blast forecast

New Met Eireann weather maps show exactly where and when snow is forecast to fall in the coming days.

Ireland is set to be gripped by a brief Arctic blast that will send temperatures tumbling as we head into the New Year.

Frost, ice, fog and wintry showers of hail, sleet and snow are all forecast over the weekend.

The national forecaster has pinpointed New Year’s Day as the exact date parts of the country could see snow.

Weather maps published on its website show wintry showers falling all across Ireland on Sunday afternoon.

Further snow is forecast for some northern areas overnight on Sunday.

It comes as a supercharged jet stream, fired up by the mega-freeze in America, is set to create turbulent weather conditions for Ireland in the lead up to the New Year.

Forecasters say the very cold air that has been spreading across the US in recent days is helping to strengthen the jet stream, which is pushing low-pressure systems across the Atlantic.

Weather maps show the predicted path of the jet stream as it heads straight towards Ireland.

Met Eireann says low pressure will be the main feature of Ireland’s over the New Year, leading to “largely unsettled conditions”.

Two separate weather warnings have been issued for rain and wind as stormy weather takes hold.

The Status Yellow alert for Rain affects Cavan, Donegal, Longford, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo from 10pm Thursday until 8am Friday. It reads: “Heavy rain will cause some localised flooding.”

Another Status Yellow alert for Wind affects Dublin, Wexford, Wicklow, Galway, Kerry and Waterford from 10pm Thursday until 7am Friday. It reads: “South to southwest winds will be very strong and gusty at times, especially near coasts and on high ground.”

Met Eireann says the weather will continue unsettled with further spells of rain and showers, before turning colder for the weekend with frosts developing. Temperatures could fall as low as -4C on Saturday night with chilly lows of -3C forecast for the night of New Year's Eve.
