Met Eireann says bank holiday weekend weather warnings may be needed in foreboding Ireland forecast

Met Eireann says that weather warnings can’t be ruled out for the June bank holiday weekend.

The national forecaster says there could be “a showery end to the week”, with some very heavy and possibly thundery downpours.

“Rainfall warnings for intensity over short periods as well as possible thunderstorm warnings could be required,” Met Eireann noted in its forecast for this week.

The meteorological agency said that while weather warnings are possible, there remains some “uncertainty in the details” about conditions over the long weekend.

While subject to change, as of Tuesday afternoon, it is good news for this weekend.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: “Current indications suggest that this weekend will be largely dry and settled with just a few showers.

“Temperatures will be in the high teens for most, possibly reaching the low twenties in some spots.”

Weather expert Alan O’Reilly also highlighted the uncertainty over this weekend’s weather on his popular Carlow Weather Twitter account, sharing pictures of the latest weather models which he says “throw a spanner in the works for the weekend with showers possible”.

There is less uncertainty regarding next week’s weather though, as high pressure looks set to move back over Ireland bringing the usual ‘Leaving Cert’ weather of sunny spells and high temperatures during the second week of June.

Met Eireann’s long-range forecast for the week of Monday, June 6 until Sunday, June 12 reads: “This week is signalled to be more settled as high pressure looks set to move back over the country with increasing temperatures. Much of the southwestern half of the country will likely have above average temperatures with more normal temperatures for the time of year elsewhere.

“Rainfall amounts are expected to be below normal throughout the country. With these settled conditions, mist and fog during the nights are the most likely hazards.”

Here’s Met Eireann’s day-by-day weather forecast for this week and the upcoming bank holiday weekend.

Wednesday, June 1

Met Eireann wrote in a post on its website: “Wednesday will be mainly dry with bright or sunny spells and a few isolated showers. Highest temperatures of 14C to 17C with light breezes.

“A mostly dry night on Wednesday with long clear spells. Winds will remain light with some mist or fog patches forming. Lowest temperatures of 4C to 8C.”

Thursday, June 2

The national forecaster continued: “A generally fine and calm start to the day on Thursday but it will turn cloudier in the afternoon with scattered showers developing mainly in the west and north. Highs of 15C to 18C or possibly 19C in light winds.

“A good deal of cloud on Thursday night with just occasional clear spells. Showers will persist in the west and north early on, with a more persistent spell of rain spreading from the northwest overnight. Lowest temperatures of 7C to 10C in light winds.”

Friday, June 3

“Any lingering rain will die out on Friday morning with sunny spells developing. However, scattered showers will develop through the day, with the chance that one or two will turn heavy. The showers will die out later in the evening. Highest temperatures of 16C to 19C.

“Becoming largely clear and dry overnight with lowest temperatures of 8C to 12C,” the weather update continued.

Saturday and Sunday, June 4 and 5

Met Eireann concluded: “Though there is some uncertainty in the details of the bank holiday weekend, current indications suggest that it will be largely dry and settled with just a few showers. Temperatures will be in the high teens for most, possibly reaching the low twenties in some spots.”
