Met Eireann's serious warning as record temperatures set to shock Ireland this weekend

A hige temperature advisory has been issued by the national forecaster as the country is set to sizzle for another week with the mercury pushing towards breaking records.

Met Eireann has issued the advisory until Tuesday when thermometers are expected to hit the high 20s and possibly exceed 30 degrees in some locations.

And with the impact of the European heatwave continuing to hit Irish shores, a Met Eireann forecaster has warned people to keep hydrated, slap on the Factor 50 and don’t spend too long outside.

“We are experiencing extremely high temperatures pushing records but there is still a little bit of doubt whether it will hold past Tuesday as by Wednesday it looks like that low pressure will bring heavy rain then,” forecaster for Met Eireann Paul Downes said.

“It’s going to get uncomfortably warm, especially at night, so people should stay as hydrated as possible,” he continued.

Monday was the hottest day of the year so far, with highs of 27.7 degrees recorded in Dublin’s Phoenix Park and 27.2 degrees recorded at Dublin Airport. Weather stations in Carlow, Meath and Clare also saw temperatures reach at least 25 degrees.

European countries are experiencing higher temperatures, with some parts of the bloc expected to reach highs of above 40 degrees in the coming days.

“After Wednesday it looks as though we will be back to more typical temperatures for this time of year - between late teens and early 20s.

When pressed if we could expect more of the ‘short term sizzle’ weather we are experiencing, Mr Downes said: “At the moment we are not.”

“We are not expecting temperatures after this spell to be above average at the moment but we can’t rule anything out long term.”

And although most of us lap up the warm temperatures, “we are not used to the upper 20s into the 30s so I’d advise people to take precautions such as staying hydrated, always have a supply of water with you, don’t stay out in the heat for too long, wear sun screen and never leave pets in vehicles.”

“Also make sure animals in general have a plentiful supply of water and an area they can shade in,” he said.

Today will continue to show sunny spells, although scattered showers will remain in the north of the country.

Into the afternoon and evening, it will become slightly cloudier as showers will spread further south.

High temperatures will persist today with highs of 15C to 22C, warmest in the southeast of the country, with a light to moderate west to northwest wind.

Later in the week, sunny spells and scattered showers will persist, but we will see a warm, sunny weekend with temperatures of up to 25C on Saturday and Sunday.

Although we can expect some good weather, this will not compare to the stifling heat that is being seen across Europe this week.

Droughts and forest fires have hit Spain and Portugal and are expected to spread to France and the UK this week.
