Met Eireann's double yellow warning as heavy rain and powerful gusts to hammer Ireland

Met Eireann has issued two weather warnings as nasty weather is set to grip Ireland.

A Status Yellow wind warning will be in place for Dublin, Wexford, Wicklow, Galway, Kerry, and Waterford from 10pm tonight until 7am tomorrow. The alert reads: "South to southwest winds will be very strong and gusty at times, especially near coasts and on high ground."

A second yellow rain warning has been issued for Cavan, Donegal, Connacht, and Longford. Met Eireann has warned of heavy rain and localised flooding. It will be valid from 10pm tonight until 8am tomorrow.

A Status Yellow gale warning is also in place for all coasts of Ireland and on the Irish Sea until 2pm today. Westerly winds will reach gale force at times.

Here is Met Eireann's national forecast for the week:

Today

"Windy at first this with sunny spells and widespread showers as well, heavy at times. The showers and winds will ease through the afternoon with good dry periods developing. Highest afternoon temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees. During the evening, outbreaks of rain and drizzle will push in from the southwest along with strengthening southerly winds.

Tonight

"Becoming wet and windy tonight as southerly winds increase strong and gusty overnight. Outbreaks of rain will continue to extend northeastwards across the country with heavier falls of rain developing in parts of the west and northwest with spot flooding. Some sleet is possible for a time over northern hills. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 5 degrees generally with frost possible in the north for a short while.

Tomorrow

"Wet tomorrow morning with fresh to strong and very gusty southwesterly winds easing. Widespread outbreaks of rain at first with heavy falls and localised flooding in places. Turning drier and brighter from the west during the morning and early afternoon. Further showers returning to western areas later with the breeze picking up again. Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees.

Friday night

"Showery outbreaks of rain will extend from southwest during the night. Driest and coldest in the north and west, with lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees, with frost and patches of fog developing. Milder elsewhere with lowest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees in mostly light to moderate southerly breezes.

Saturday (New Year's Eve)

"Further showery outbreaks of rain expected, most widespread at first but good dry periods will develop through the day, especially from mid-afternoon. Highest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees generally, cooler though in parts of the north, in light to moderate westerly breezes.

Saturday night

"A very cold night, especially over the northern half of the country, with lowest temperatures of -4 to +1 degrees with frost and icy stretches developing widely. Largely dry for much of the night though there will be a few showers with falls of sleet possible. Light variable breezes will also allow patches of fog to develop. More persistent rain will develop in the southwest towards morning.

Sunday (New Year's Day)

"There is a good deal uncertainty in the forecast for New Year's Day but indications are that rain in the southwest will gradually extend across the country, falling as sleet in places with snow on high ground. Highest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees generally, milder along southern coasts. Gradually becoming drier overnight but remaining cold with lowest temperatures of -3 to +1 degrees.
