Met Eireann pinpoints when freezing temperatures will hit in chaotic forecast

Time to bundle up as Met Eireann has revealed when freezing temperatures are set to hit Dublin.

The capital will enjoy a couple of days of mild weather before the mercury plummets to as low as 0 degrees. Ireland will be lashed with thundery downpours and flooding today, a weather expert has warned.

Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather said: "Starting off dry for many areas but heavy rain in Southwest at first will extend to other areas and risk of some thundery downpours with local flooding possible. Over 20mm possible in the southwest and locally where thunderstorms hit."

Today will be blustery and dry but will become cloudier in the afternoon with showery outbreaks following in the evening, turning heavy at times.

It will be a mild day with the highest temperatures of 15 or 16 degrees. Tonight will be mostly cloudy with further outbreaks of rain, heaviest early in the night before become lighter and patchier and clearing by morning. Temperatures will be around 7 or 8 degrees.

There is no further forecast for Dublin but here is what the national outlook says:

Monday night

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "A wet and windy night at first as the rain continues to track northeastwards, becoming drier for a time before showers follow, mainly affecting the south and west. Fresh to strong and gusty southeasterly winds will moderate as the rain clears.

"Lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees generally.

Tuesday

"The last of the overnight rain will clear the northeast in the morning to leave a day of sunshine and long dry periods for much of the country. Blustery showers or longer spells of rain will affect southern and western coastal counties.

"Highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in mostly moderate south to southeast winds, fresher on southern and western coasts.

Tuesday night

"Long clear spells overnight with showers continuing. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees in mostly light to moderate south to southwest winds."
