Meanwhile, forecaster Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather has warned that a "very hot" band of air is at risk of pushing into England and Wales on July 17, with a chance that Ireland could catch the edge of the heat blast.

In a tweet, he said: "Weather models have risk of very hot air pushing into England and Wales around 17th but there is huge uncertainty around it. Worst case scenario shown on GFS again tonight with up to 43c for Southeast England. Hopefully won't happen. Ireland could catch edge of it but not as hot."
