Met Eireann issues three-hour orange weather warning for one county as stormy conditions batter Ireland

Donegal will be under a status orange weather warning this evening as more stormy conditions batter Ireland.

Met Eireann's alert for high winds will come into force at 4pm and last until 7pm.

The forecaster said: "Late this afternoon (Thursday) and this evening, strong to gale force west to northwest winds with severe gusts of up to 130 km/hr."

Two other wind warnings are also in effect at the moment with a status yellow alert for Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo until 8pm.

A separate warning is in place for Galway and Mayo until 6pm with more high winds forecast.

The national forecaster is expecting a cold and windy day countrywide with little chance of the stormy weather coming to an end anytime soon.

They added: "Sunny spells and showers of sleet, snow and hail and a few isolated thunderstorms. The showers will turn mainly to rain, hail or sleet. Fresh, gusty northwest winds, becoming strong in the west. In Co. Donegal, northwest winds will become very strong with severe gusts from mid-afternoon through this evening. Highest temperatures of just 4 to 7 degrees.

"Tonight there will be clear spells and scattered showers of rain or sleet and falling as snow on high ground. Showers will mostly die out overnight. It will be cold with lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees generally, so frost and ice is possible. Breezy early in the night with fresh and gusty westerly winds but winds will gradually ease overnight."
