Met Eireann issues immediate four-hour thunderstorm warning for three counties as hail batters island

Met Eireann have issued an immediate thunderstorm warning for the next four hours for three countries.

Rain and hail have battered the eastern coast in the last few hours and that has led the national forecaster to issue the status yellow weather warning for thunder for Dublin, Kildare and Meath.

It came into effect a few minutes ago and lasts until 6pm.

It reads: "Further heavy showers with isolated thunderstorms and the chance of hail this afternoon. Hazardous driving conditions with possible spot flooding."

That's to add to the gale warning around Irish coasts, which warns "South to southwest winds will reach gale force 8 at times."

Both expire at 6pm.

The forecast for the rest of the day reads: "Blustery this afternoon with scattered showers, many heavy with isolated thunderstorms and hail showers. Sunny spells between showers.

"South to southwest winds will be moderate to fresh, strong in coastal areas especially along the west and northwest. Wave overtopping is possible along Atlantic coasts. Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees. Winds and showers will ease this evening."

Then on Wednesday evening, Met Eireann say: "Tonight will start dry with clear spells but cloudier conditions will extend from the south with showery outbreaks of rain following. The rain will be heaviest in the south. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees. Southerly winds will increase moderate to fresh and gusty, strong at times along exposed coasts."
