Met Eireann issue Status Yellow warning with six counties to be hit by 'very strong' winds

A Status Yellow wind warning has been issued by Met Eireann for six coastal counties as the weather continues to take a major turn away from the sunny summer direction it was headed.

The warning, which is in place for the coastal counties of Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Galway and Mayo, was issued by the national forecaster on Easter Monday just before 11am and will come into effect at 1am on Wednesday morning, staying in place until 5pm the same day.

Issuing the warning, Met Éireann said: “Very strong west to northwest winds developing.

“Widespread gusts of between 90 and 110 km/h expected, stronger in coastal areas and over higher ground. Wave overtopping in coastal areas.”

A Yellow wind warning is also in place for the northern counties of Antrim and Down which is valid from 3am on Tuesday until 3pm on Wednesday.

Announcing the warning, the UK Met Office said: “A period of strong winds bringing the potential for some disruption later on Tuesday and perhaps into the early hours of Wednesday.”

Multiple marine warnings are also in place on Tuesday and Wednesday for the entirety of the coastal region around Ireland, while the majority of the country’s coast is under a Status Yellow marine warning - some of the west coast is under a Status Orange storm warning.

Met Eireann said: “West to northwest winds will reach storm force 10 at times on Irish coastal waters from Roche's Point to Loop Head to Rossan Point.”

Met Éireann issues three categories of weather warnings, yellow, orange and red, ahead of any severe weather. Each category is different and as such require different actions, such as preparation before a storm.

In a post on its website, Met Éireann meteorologist Siobhán Ryan explains what each warning category means and what action is warranted for each.

“A status yellow weather alert is given to warn those at risk from certain weather because of their location and/or their activity,” Siobhán explained.

“It advises these people to take preventative action. Expected weather conditions in a status yellow alert do not pose an immediate risk to the general population.
