Met Eireann issue rare alert as warm weather to cause fire danger for parts of Ireland

Met Éireann and the Department of Agriculture have alerted the public of a heightened risk of forest fire in Ireland over the next few days.

The warm spell has seen temperatures average out at around 17C per day.

And though things are set to take a bit of a turn from next week, there is still a warning in place for the next three days, until midday on Monday.

The Department of Agriculture explained in the status orange fire warning: "An increase in fire risk can be expected through the coming weekend as these conditions persist.

"Current ignition risks appear to be mainly associated burning of vegetation in upland areas. Fire behaviour and rates of spread are likely to be influenced by lower daytime humidity levels and light to moderate wind speeds during the lifespan of this warning.

"Wind speeds may exceed 20km/h is some areas at times and higher windspeeds will increase suppression requirements where these occur."

Both the Department and the national forecaster gave five key tips for people:

  1. Do not light fires in and around forests or open land.
  2. Do not attempt to intervene or fight fires under any circumstances.
  3. Gather all family/group members and move to a safe fuel-free location such as a car park, upwind of the fire.
  4. Telephone Fire and Rescue Services via 112 and report the fire and its location.
  5. Evacuate if instructed to do so, and cooperate with all Emergency Service Instructions.
