A Status Yellow rain and thunderstorm warning has been issued for the entire country, with a risk of lightning and rain for Dublin.
The warning is in place from 7pm until 3am tomorrow. According to Met Eireann, heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms will spread northwards with lightning and spot flooding in places.
Yellow level alerts indicate weather conditions that do not pose an immediate threat to the general population, but only to those exposed to risk by nature of their location and/or activity. It comes after Electric Picnic festival-goers were warned that they were in for a "rough night" with thunderstorms throughout the night.
It comes as European Storm Forecast Experiment have said that the conditions this evening bring the threat of localised tornadoes. The European forecasters said: "Intense lift from accompanying mid-level troughs will likely create two forced convective rainbands in an environment that is favourable for severe wind gusts as well as tornadoes."
The rain is also set to continue throughout the night with only a few breaks, with the miserable conditions set to make a dreaded return on Monday. A Met Eireann forecaster said: "It will continue rather windy tonight. Heavy rain along with a few thunderstorms will spread northwards over Ireland.
"There will be spot flooding and lightning in places. Clear spells and isolated showers will follow from the south later. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees with moderate to fresh southeast winds, strong at times near coasts."
