Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecasts torrential downpours with 'dangerous' warning in effect

One county has been placed under a status yellow rain warning on Monday as torrential weather moves in off the Atlantic.

The alert is in place until 1pm for Co Cork, with Met Eireann forecaster warning of "heavy rain tonight and for a time tomorrow, in parts of south and southwest Cork," leading to localised flooding and dangerous driving conditions.

Although some areas will be dry this morning, the rain will move northeastwards across the country throughout the morning and afternoon and there may be some heavy and thundery bursts.

This will be followed by scattered showers from the southwest, and it will be breezy with moderate to fresh east to southeast winds, occasionally increasing to strong.

Despite this, highest temperatures are expected to be mild, ranging from 10 to 14 degrees - mildest in the southwest. The showers of rain will continue overnight, with Tuesday morning being mostly cloudy with scattered outbreaks of rain.

During the afternoon and evening, some lucky areas will experience sunny spells but there will also be widespread showers. Many of the showers will be heavy with hail expected and there will be a risk of isolated thunderstorms in some areas.

Temperatures will remain mild on Tuesday with highs of 16 degrees and light south to southeast or variable winds. The rain will continue into Wednesday with some showers due to develop in the west.

During the early afternoon, the showers will become more widespread but they will clear from most areas by evening. Thursday will be cloudy with even more outbreaks of rain and drizzle, which will move northeastwards across the country.

Current indications from the Irish forecaster said: ”It looks like Friday will be mild with scattered showers and the best of any sunny spells in the afternoon and early evening. Highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees, coolest near the south coast, in a light to moderate southerly breeze.”

As for the weekend ahead, “Currently it looks like there will be showers on Saturday, followed by drier weather on Easter Sunday. Staying mild with afternoon temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees.”
