Met Eireann gives thunderstorm warning with status yellow alert for nine counties

Met Eireann has issued a thunderstorm warning for nine counties with "poor conditions" set to hamper drivers.

The status yellow alert will impact Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon, Sligo, Longford, Offaly and Westmeath.

While Dublin has escaped the status yellow warning, there are still thundery showers forecast for today, along with heavy rain expected.

The national forecaster says that thunderstorms will hit the nine counties on Monday afternoon and evening with localised downpours leading to poor driving conditions.

The warning is in effect until 9pm on Monday night.

As for Dublin, while thundery showers are expected today, this evening should be dry. Temperatures will range between 10 and 12 degrees

Here is the forecast for the rest of the week:

Tomorrow: Outbreaks of rain will clear northwards tomorrow morning but another spell of rain will quickly follow from the south. The rain will become widespread and heavy through the afternoon with the risk of spot flooding. It is likely to clear again in the evening. Highest temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees in moderate to fresh southerly winds, easing light to moderate in the afternoon.

Wednesday: A largely dry and sunny start with isolated showers in the northwest. However, a band of rain will move in from the southwest and track northeastwards across the country through the afternoon and evening with some heavy downpours possible. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees in moderate to fresh and gusty south or southeasterly winds, increasing strong at times near coasts.

Thursday: A mix of sunny spells and scattered showers. However, there will be decent dry spells for most areas. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees in moderate south to southwest winds, winds stronger near western coasts.

At the moment Friday looks like it will be very showery or wet with some blustery or perhaps strong winds locally, and temperatures around the mid-teens.
