Met Eireann gives rare weekend forecast as storm remnants unleash weather bedlam in Ireland

Met Eireann has confirmed that Ireland is in for rare “unseasonable” weather conditions this weekend.

Thundery downpours, lightning, hail and flooding are all forecast along with brisk winds - all of which the national forecaster says are not typical for this time of the year.

It comes as the remnants of a tropical storm continues to influence Ireland’s weather into the weekend.

Ex-Tropical Storm Alex has now developed into a more typical low-pressure system which is due to move near the northwest of the country on Friday and Saturday.

Met Eireann it will bring "widespread heavy and possibly thundery showers, with the chance of lightning, local hail and spot flooding" on top of "blustery southwesterly winds" throughout Friday and Saturday. Both wind and showers are expected to ease on Sunday.

The best conditions this weekend will be in southern areas, which could escape the brunt of the weather bedlam.

The State meteorological service says there will be some sunny spells on Saturday, with the south and southeast staying driest overall.

Its forecast for Saturday reads: “Saturday will bring further widespread showers, especially across the northwest and west where it will be rather cool. There will be some sunny spells also, with the south and southeast staying driest overall.

“Highest temperatures of 14C to 18C. Another unseasonably blustery day with brisk west to southwest winds. Winds will moderate in most places by the evening with some late sunshine developing

“Becoming drier overnight on Saturday night with clear spells and isolated showers. Winds will ease to a light or moderate westerly breeze. Lowest temperatures of 8C to 11C.”

It’s expected to be a better day weather-wise on Sunday as the tail end of the former tropical storm clears away from Ireland.

Met Eireann said: “Showers will be lighter on Sunday and more scattered than on previous days, with good dry and bright or sunny spells in between. Highest temperatures of 14C to 18C with a fresh westerly breeze, decreasing moderate later.

“Mainly dry on Sunday night with a few showers in western areas, and varying cloud cover. Lowest temperatures of 7C to 10C with winds easing light.”

Looking ahead to next week, the national forecaster says that “changeable” conditions will continue.

A post on its website reads: “Monday will bring a lot of dry weather with just well scattered showers. Cloud cover will vary with some brighter spells at times. Highest temperatures of 14C to 17C with a moderate southwest breeze.

“A spell of rain looks likely to move into the northwest on Monday night.

“Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain or drizzle over Connacht and Ulster. The wet weather is currently predicted to become more widespread across the country on Tuesday night and for Wednesday with brighter drier conditions set to follow later on Wednesday.

“Current indications suggest rather changeable conditions for the further outlook but with generally improving temperatures.”
