Met Eireann forecasts unsettled conditions as mercury nosedives due to 'polar airmass'

Ireland will shiver as temperatures are set to nosedive due to a "polar maritime airmass".

After a record-breaking summer, temperatures are set to dip and unsettled weather will take hold. Speaking about the week starting from September 26, a Met Eireann forecaster said: "With low pressure nearby Ireland for week 1, repeated bands of rain and showers will fall over the country throughout the week.

"A predominantly northwesterly airflow will lead to a mostly polar maritime airmass affecting the country, bringing close to average or slightly below temperatures for the time of year."

Tonight will be mostly dry with clear spells but there is a chance of an isolated shower. Temperatures will be around 6 or 7 degrees.

Tomorrow will be sunny with scattered showers. Temperatures will range around 14 to 15 degrees.

While there is no further forecast for Dublin, here is what the national outlook says:

Wednesday night

"Mostly dry with clear spells and just isolated showers. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 9 degrees. Patches of mist are possible in light winds.

Thursday

"Mostly dry with sunny spells and isolated light showers. Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees in a light north to northwest wind.

Thursday night

" Dry with clear spells early in the night but cloud will increase and rain will move into the west and northwest overnight. Light and variable winds at first, becoming southerly and increasing moderate to fresh in the west and northwest. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees.

Friday

"Wet and breezy with rain moving east across the country, heavy at times. Clearer conditions with scattered showers will follow from the northwest later. Highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees with a fresh and gusty southerly wind, veering westerly after the rain."
