Met Eireann forecasts frosty snap as overnight temperatures plummet

Icy weather is set to hit Dublin later tonight as temperatures nosedive below freezing.

Daytime conditions will remain relatively mild, with a few patches of light rain and drizzle across Leinster. Moderate to fresh southerly winds will ease later on this evening.

However, a stark drop in temperatures is expected tonight as icy stretches develop. The forecast suggests that widespread frost could grip the country as temperatures drop to as low as -3 degrees, with colder conditions possible in some local areas.

Fog and mist patches will also envelop southerly parts of the country during the cold snap. The frost is expected to clear on Sunday, although unsettled conditions will likely dampen the beginning of next week.

Met Eireann's national forecast for the next few days is listed below.

Saturday night

Tonight will be cold and dry with long clear spells. A widespread frost and possibly some icy stretches will develop as temperatures fall to between -3 and +1 degrees, or locally lower, and while winds ease light and variable mist and fog patches may also develop especially in the south of the region.

Sunday

Sunday morning will be cold, frosty and foggy but it will be dry with hazy sunshine developing as any frost and fog clears. Highest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees, in mostly moderate southerly or variable winds.

Sunday night

Cloudy with patches of light rain and drizzle developing. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees generally in moderate southerly winds with some hill fog developing.

Monday

Mostly cloudy with scattered light rain or drizzle, mainly in Atlantic coastal counties while the best of the drier conditions and sunny spells will be in the southeast. Highest temperatures of 8 to 10 degrees in mostly moderate southerly winds.

Monday night

Mostly cloudy with a weak band of patchy light rain extending from the northwest through the night. As the rain clears the northwest towards morning, drier clearer conditions will develop. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees, coldest later in the northwest once the rain clears as light southwest winds veer northerly.
