Met Eireann forecasts dramatic end of heat spell for Dublin after 33C scorcher

Summer is set to end with a blast as Met Eireann has issued a tumultuous forecast for the coming days.

Temperatures could hit as high as 33 degrees — near the all-time record for the hottest day which currently stands at 33.3 degrees. "It would also exceed the August high which would be likely to be broken over the coming days!" Weather Alerts Ireland said.

A Status Yellow High Temperature warning is in place for Leinster and Munster from today until Sunday. A Met Eireann forecaster warned: "Very warm or hot on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with maximum temperatures generally of 27 to 29 degrees.

"Warm at night with temperatures generally staying above 15 degrees. Daytime temperatures may not be as high in coastal areas due to sea breezes."

However, a dramatic change is on the way as heavy showers and thundery downpours will lash the country. Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather said: "Latest weather models continue to show a risk of heavy showers later on Sunday and Monday with potential for some thunderstorms but this far out it is hard to call.

"Next week will see temperatures drop back and also some showers." Here is the nationwide forecast by Met Eireann

Today

The forecaster continued: "Mist and fog in parts this morning clearing for a dry and sunny day, although some may linger near northeastern coasts. Very warm with sea breezes developing this afternoon, otherwise there will be little wind.

"Highest temperatures generally between 24 to 29 degrees, but likely to reach 30 degrees in localised parts of Leinster and Munster. It will be a little cooler towards the coastline, particularly in Connacht and west Ulster.

Tonight

"Mild tonight with temperatures generally not falling below 10 to 15 degrees, staying above 16 or 17 degrees in some areas. Rather calm with just a light breeze in parts, allowing some pockets of mist or fog to form again. Otherwise, it will be a dry and clear night.

Tomorrow

"Friday will be a hot and sunny day with highest temperatures generally between 25 to 30 degrees, possibly reaching the low 30s in a few inlands spots of Leinster or Munster. Not as warm near coasts, with sea breezes developing in the afternoon. Winds will be light elsewhere. A chance of fog lingering in some coastal areas also.

Friday night

"Dry and clear but staying rather warm in some parts overnight with lowest temperatures ranging 13 to 17 degrees. Patches of mist or fog will form in light breezes.

Saturday

"Hot, dry and sunny again, with a light northeast breeze. Highest temperatures of 26 to 30 degrees, possibly exceeding 30 degrees in a few inland spots. Slight chance of an isolated shower developing too.

Sunday

"Sunday is expected to start dry and sunny however cloud may build in some areas during the day, bringing possible heavy showers or thundery downpours to parts. Very warm with light winds, highs in the mid to high 20s. Sunday night will be rather warm and muggy with possible showers."
