A ‘turbo-charged’ jet stream is hurtling towards Ireland this week and it’s set to bring brutal conditions our way in the form of Atlantic storms.
Forecasters across Europe have said it will near Ireland this week, and will likely have a major impact on our weather as it takes on the characteristics of winter.
Met Eireann has warned of a risk of some “very windy” weather as well as spells of heavy rain. There is some uncertainty in the details after the midweek point, but one Irish weather expert has pinpointed Thursday and Friday as potentially stormy days.

Alan O’Reilly posted on his popular Carlow Weather Twitter account and said: “Jet stream heading towards us later in the coming week and will fire up some storms in the Atlantic.
“A lot of uncertainty around the details but a risk of spells of wet and windy weather around Thursday and Friday. Keeping an eye.”
This comes as a forecaster from Netweather described the jet stream as “turbocharged” due to the tropical air from the south battling with cold air sweeping down from the Arctic.
As for the national forecast from Met Eireann for this week, today (Monday) will be cold this morning with some sunshine peeking through.
There will be a mix of cloud and sunny spells throughout the day, with light showers in some northern parts but most places will be dry. The highest temperatures will range from 11 to 15 degrees with moderate westerly winds, winds light in the south.
On Tuesday, it will be quite cloudy with spots of drizzle, but many areas will be dry weather for most of the day with some bright spells.
However come evening time, outbreaks of rain will develop in Connacht and western parts of Ulster and Munster. As a result, it will turn breezier throughout the day with moderate southwest winds increasing from fresh to strong on western coasts.
There will be a dull start to Wednesday with scattered outbreaks of rain, clearing eastwards through the late morning. There may be a shower or two in the afternoon, according to the Irish forecaster, but many places will be dry and bright for the rest of the day with highs of 13 to 15 degrees expected with light westerly breezes.
There is “uncertainty in the forecast increases after midweek,” Irish forecasters say, but it looks as though we’re in for a dry start on Thursday before it likely turns cloudy with rain developing, - some showers will be potentially heavy.
The timing of the rainfall is uncertain but it will become breezier in a strengthening southerly airflow. Highs of 13 to 15 degrees are expected as winds veer westerly and rain clears to showers later.
Friday is expected to be very breezy with widespread showers, and possibly longer spells of rain in parts. It will potentially be windy with strong gusts possible in the north.
It will also begin feeling cold with highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees.
As for farther afield, Met Eireann says: “Unsettled in breezy or windy weather with frequent showers or longer spells of rain at times. Feeling cold with temperatures a little below the norm.”
