Met Eireann extends 'freezing fog', ice and snow warning

Met Eireann have issued three weather warnings for Dublin as the cold snap is set to last until at least Wednesday next week.

The freezing fog, snow and ice warnings were issued today and are valid until midday tomorrow. The cold snap is due to "artic airmass" coming into Irish air space.

There is expected to be hail, sleet and snow in costal counties until Wednesday. The freezing fog is expected to be more prevalent at weekends.

The treacherous conditions even resulted in dozens of flights being cancelled at Dublin Airport.

The freezing fog warning reads: "Pockets of freezing fog are expected, causing potentially hazardous travel conditions." Met Eireann's ice warning reads: "A sharp frost and further icy stretches will set in on Saturday night as temperatures dip to -5 degrees in places."

The snow warning reads: "Snow showers will lead to accumulations in places, most substantial over high ground." Met Eireann also issued a winter weather advisory for the country which is valid until Wednesday next week.

It read: "Remaining very cold into the middle of next week due to an Arctic airmass, bringing sharp to severe frosts, and ice or black ice on roads and footpaths. Some showers of hail, sleet, and snow will occur, mainly in coastal counties.

"Freezing fog is likely at times, especially this weekend. Winds over land will remain generally light."
