Met Eireann confirm stunning change is days away - but is Ireland set for a glorious heatwave?

Met Eireann has confirmed the summer sunshine will reappear in a matter of days after rain and strong winds batter the country this week.

Temperatures will reach 18C once again from Friday, however, showers are expected to continue across the northwest and west.

The rain arrived today after a stunning weekend of sunshine, and it looks as if these conditions will continue into the night in most counties.

The afternoon rain “will be followed by a band of showers this evening and some will be heavy,” according to the Irish forecaster - especially in northern areas with isolated thunder possible here.

The best of the late evening sunny spells will occur in the west and northwest once the showers clear while highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees are expected.

Tuesday will be a blustery day with sunny spells and scattered showers - some heavy at times.

It will be mildest in the southeast, with fresh to strong and gusty southwesterly winds. There is a possibility of heavy showers and even hail overnight.

Wednesday will bring bright and fresh weather with sunny spells and scattered showers. Some will be heavy with a possibility of hail and thunder and temperatures will range from 13 to 16 degrees.

The wet weather will continue into Thursday morning, with overcast conditions expected from the morning with scattered outbreaks of rain in the west and north - but it will be largely dry elsewhere.

The welcome change will then come on Thursday night into Friday and is due to last through the weekend as sunshine and a rise in temperatures will be seen.

Met Eireann currently predicts a “change on Friday, with a good deal of dry but rather cloudy weather and showers in the west and northwest.

“Milder than Thursday though, with highs of 13 to 18 degrees, mildest in the southeast.

“At the moment it looks like it will turn drier and warmer for the weekend.”

According to the monthly forecast, the warm weather is set to stay well into next week as "high pressure looks set to dominate with more settled conditions expected."

Rainfall amounts will be below average from next week and temperatures will be higher than normal for mid-May.
