Mesut Ozil predicts Premier League, Champions League and World Cup winners

Mesut Ozil claims Liverpool will fall short in their search for an unprecedented quadruple this season as he has tipped Manchester City to triumph in the Premier League.

However, the former Arsenal ace has backed Jurgen Klopp's side to win their seventh European crown this season with success in the Champions League. The Reds have been drawn against Benfica in the quarter-finals and will need to overcome either Bayern Munich or Villarreal in the semis if they are to reach the Stade de France showpiece in May.

City are on the other side of the draw and will face Atletico Madrid over two last-eight legs with the victor progressing to a blockbuster semi-final against holders Chelsea or 13-time continental conquerors Real Madrid.

On the domestic stage, reigning champions City have the edge in the two-horse title race with a slender one-point advantage over Liverpool. Pep Guardiola's men dropped points in their last top-flight game as Crystal Palace held them to a goalless draw at Selhurst Park. This came after City opened the door for their rivals to close the gap with a dramatic 3-2 defeat by Tottenham in February.

The momentum is undoubtedly with Liverpool, who have won their last nine league games, but Ozil expects the trophy to remain at the Etihad. The former Germany international took to Twitter to make his predictions for the run-in, backing City for the Premier League title and Liverpool for Champions League glory.

Ozil - a World Cup winner in 2014 who now plies his trade with Fenerbahce - also turned his attention to the upcoming tournament in Qatar this winter and, to the delight of England fans, threw his weight behind the Three Lions to bring football home.

England's credentials will be put to the test over the next week as they host Switzerland and Ivory Coast in friendlies at Wembley Stadium. Gareth Southgate's side have come on leaps and bounds in recent years, reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup in Russia four years ago and the final of Euro 2020.

The Three Lions suffered an agonising defeat by Italy on penalties last summer but there is no denying their youthful squad is one of the most exciting in world football. England qualified for Qatar with a fine record of eight wins and two draws to top Group I.

Southgate must now begin the difficult task of weighing up which players will board the plane to the Middle East in November. France are the reigning world champions having defeated Croatia in a pulsating final in 2018, while Brazil, England and Spain are also among the bookmaker's favourites to win this year's tournament.
