Lionel Messi needed three handwritten pages to say goodbye to Argentina's national team. But amid the emotional reflections, crossed-out words and memories spanning more than two decades, fans found one small detail that added an unexpected touch of magic to the moment.
Resting across the pages was a metallic pen decorated with a miniature Time-Turner, the magical object Hermione Granger uses in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The discovery quickly went viral, revealing that the world's most famous soccer family may also be one of the most devoted households outside Hogwarts.
Messi, 39, announced his retirement from international soccer on Monday, bringing an end to a 21-year run with Argentina's senior national team. The captain leaves as the country's record holder with 125 goals in 207 appearances, according to Reuters.
The farewell was deeply personal. Instead of releasing a polished statement through representatives, Messi shared photographs of three notebook pages filled with his handwriting. The corrections and uneven lines remained visible, making the announcement feel more like a private letter than a carefully packaged retirement campaign.
Then Potterheads zoomed in.
The pen placed on top of the letter featured the Time-Turner's familiar circular design and tiny hourglass. In the third installment of the Harry Potter series, Hermione receives the device from Professor McGonagall so she can attend overlapping classes. Later, Hermione and Harry use it to travel several hours into the past.

The symbolism was almost too perfect. Messi was looking back at more than 20 years with Argentina while holding an object associated with turning back time. Inevitably, some fans wondered whether the captain had chosen it deliberately or had simply grabbed one of Antonela Roccuzzo's pens.
The second possibility is entirely plausible because Roccuzzo has never hidden her devotion to Harry Potter.
In May 2020, she shared a photograph of her original Spanish-language copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. "This is my first Harry Potter book. It is 20 years old and already yellow," she wrote in the Instagram post, asking her followers who else was just as much of a fan.
Messi, however, has also been caught participating enthusiastically in the family obsession.
In November 2021, Roccuzzo published a video showing the soccer star stretched out on the floor with two of their sons while watching a Harry Potter movie. Messi was positioned directly in front of a roaring fireplace, prompting his wife to tease in Spanish, "Is anyone a little cold?"
The scene looked less like the home of an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner and more like a cozy movie night in the Gryffindor common room. A version of the family video remains available on Instagram.
Their sons entered the wizarding world even earlier. In 2019, Thiago and Mateo dressed as Harry Potter for Carnival, wearing black Hogwarts robes, striped ties, round glasses and lightning-bolt scars drawn on their foreheads. The boys completed their transformations with wands and elaborate broomsticks.

Roccuzzo shared the costumes with the caption "Dying of love with my wizards," along with the Marauder's Map phrase, "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good." The images were reported at the time by Sports Illustrated.
The family's collection of Potter clues now includes old books, movie marathons, Hogwarts costumes and, apparently, the pen used for one of the most important letters of Messi's career.
Whether the Time-Turner was selected for its symbolism remains unknown. Messi did not explain the choice, and there is no indication that the pen carried a secret message about reversing his decision. Still, its appearance offered fans a gentler detail in an otherwise painful farewell.
Unfortunately for Argentina supporters, Hermione's Time-Turner only works at Hogwarts. But if Messi ever decides to reverse this retirement, he already has the perfect pen with which to write the next chapter.
