The Devil Wears Prada was a certified smash when it dropped back in 2006, and Meryl Streep apparently clocked it from day one. So much so, she doubled her salary ask when she was first offered the role of the now-iconic Miranda Priestly.
Now, nearly 20 years on, Streep spilled on the power move while chatting about Devil Wears Prada 2 alongside her co-stars Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.
“I read the script [for the original], the script was great. They called me up and they made an offer, and I said, ‘No, not going to do it’,” Streep said during an interview with Today.
“I knew it was going to be a hit, and I wanted to see if I doubled my ask … And they went right away and said, ‘Sure’. I thought, I’m 50-60 [years old] — it took me this long to understand that I could do that! They needed me, I felt. I was ready to retire. That was a lesson.”

So, how much did she manage to snag in the end?
There have been conflicting reports about what that number might have been. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Streep earned around $5 million for The Devil Wears Prada, after an original offer of $2.5 million. Meanwhile the Daily Mail claimed the number was closer to $4 million.
Whatever the figure may have been, it was certainly money well spent!
The original film raked in over $325 million worldwide and had critics frothing over the cast. Meryl Streep even snagged a Golden Globe and an Oscar nom for her turn as icy editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly, who runs fictional fashion bible Runway (widely seen as a nod to Anna Wintour).

And yep, talks of a sequel had been floating around since way back in 2009.
“They started talking about a sequel, but we all waited until we had that good idea,” Streep said. “I think we all had to do it as well — you got to have all four of us come back,” added Blunt, who played Miranda’s long-suffering first assistant, Emily Charlton. “There were mutterings and rumblings for years.”
“Lots of ideas,” Streep added. “But it’s almost like the world had to shift in that way for Aline [Brosh McKenna] … to get a new idea that made sense. These people had to confront what’s going on in the world of journalism and publishing and politics. Everything has kind of flipped. And that’s cool, that that had a story embedded in it.”
Which brings us to the idea that finally got Devil Wears Prada 2 off the ground two decades on. All four stars are back, but the fashion world (and everything around it) has shifted.
Meanwhile, reviews for the movie have been somewhat mixed, with some critics loving the nostalgia while others described it as feeling rather hollow compared to the original.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is in cinemas now, so go check it out for yourself!
That’s all.
