Women labelled as "witches" were tried, hanged, and drowned in a Merseyside village four centuries ago.
During the 17th century, barbaric trials took place in towns across the country to 'confirm' a woman was in fact a "witch". Alleged "witches" were "tried, drowned and hanged" in one area which now inhabits Merseyside - with another being executed alongside the Pendle witch trials
For generations, residents across St Helens have heard "whispers" of folktales and witchcraft dating back hundreds of years. But some research argues that these cases were more frequent than originally thought, with executions thought to have also taken place in the small village of Rainford.
