Merseyside’s ‘Windsor’ where people watch TV in the dark and struggle to feed their children

In Amanda Young’s house, near enough every appliance is switched off.

“I just watch the tele in my room with all of the lights off,” the 47-year-old tells the ECHO after finishing her shop at the Indy Pantry in Bootle. She says she does this to help save on electricity use, as well as going to bed early.

The pantry she’s visiting today, based within the Independence Initiative on Balliol Road, also helps her money go further. Asked how she’s feeling about the winter ahead, when energy bills could rocket to as much as £4,000, a worried look appears on her face.
