Merseyside's lost schools that closed their doors forever

Memories from our school days are ones that stick with us forever.

Even though many old schools have been demolished or merged, they won't be forgotten by those who attended them. We asked ECHO readers about the schools they used to go to that they can no longer walk past or send their children to.

The list is not exhaustive, and if we have missed any out, please let us know in the comments. We're starting with former schools on the Wirral:

Acre Lane in Bromborough

he land was sold by the council in 2016 years after the school had closed and there were controversial plans for housing on the site.

Bebington High School For Boys ('Chegger')

IN the 1980s the boys' school was closed and reopened as a mixed school and renamed Bebington High.

Egerton Grove, Wallasey

The school has been demolished.

Gorsedale Secondary Modern

A popular school for boys, particularly after WWII, it closed in the 1980s.

Highfield School, Oxton

The school on Bidston Road accommodated children from the age of two to 17 but closed in July 2007.

Holt Hill Convent, Birkenhead

After losing a grant status in the 70s, Holt Hill joined Heathley High School to become the Marian High School (also now closed).

Kingsmead, Hoylake

Kingsmead only announced its closure after 116 years in 2020 leaving parents devastated.

Kingsway School, Leasowe

Previously the Wallasey School and before that Henry Meoles, the secondary school finally closed in 2018 with the site still empty.

Kirkland's, Rock Ferry

The school on Alpha Drive was demolished and homes were built on the site in the early 1990s.

Leasowe Primary

The school was demolished and housing now stands on the site.

Marion High School, Woodchurch

Patricia Hendrick said: "Marion High School on the Woodchurch."

Maria Brady said; "Marion High when it was at Holt Hill Convent. Top of whetstone lane. Demolished."

Maris Stella RC High School

The school opened in the former Convalescent Home on Rowson Street in the 1920s, closing in 1972. The building was later demolished and Nelson Court and Rodney Court flats now stand on the site.

Marymount Convent School, Wallasey

Mazzy Moo said: "Yes Marymount Convent School Wallasey and it was amazing!"

Mostyn House at Parkgate

The school site was redeveloped into luxury housing.

Mount Primary

The original school at the bottom of Mount Road was demolished and the school moved to the only Weatherhead High School science block on Mount Pleasant Road.

Noctorum High School, Wirral

Karen Duke said: "I went to Noctorum High School for Girls until 1979, it changed names over the years but it got demolished."

Oldershaw Lower School/St Hilda's Secondary Modern School

Oldershaw's Lower School opened in 1982 on the site of St Hilda's, just off Ormond Street in Liscard. The whole school moved in 2000 to what was formerly Oldershaw's upper school on Valkyrie Road.

The building was demolished and replaced with housing.

Oxley School

Also known as the Wallasey Technical High, it closed in August 1988.

Park High, Birkenhead

The school became the University Academy of Birkenhead after it merged with Rock Ferry High in 2011.

Poulton Primary, Wallasey

Lisa Napper said: "Both my primary and secondary. Poulton Primary in Wallasey demolished and Weatherhead High all three sites demolished and a relocation new build."

The primary school on Alderley Road became a victim of Wirral Council's primary places review and closed in 2008. Nearby Park Primary relocated temporarily to the school building during major rebuilding works on its site.

The school building was later demolished. In 2013 councillors approved plans to replace it with 33 affordable houses and apartments, which now stand on the site.

Quarry Mount, New Brighton

Val Robinson said: "Quarry mount new Brighton my old girls school."

Rock Ferry High School, Wirral

Lisa-Marie Lawler said: "Rock Ferry High School. No more needs said."

The school closed in 2011 when it merged with Park High to create the University Academy of Birkenhead.

Somerville School, Wallasey

The empty school building on Gorsey Lane was demolished and replaced in 2009 by Willow Bank apartments for people aged 55 and over.

St Bede's Middle School, Wallasey

Diana Woodfinden said: "St Bede's Middle School, Wallasey."

Julie Holme said: "Saint Bede's, Wallasey Village - Weatherhead is on the site now."

St Benedict's, Upton

A school on this site has had a long history, before it was St Benedict's it was Nocturum Hogh School for Girls and then Marian High.

St Benedict's closed in 2002.

St George's Secondary School, Wallasey

Lynn Thomas said: "St George's, Wallasey. Only solar heated school in Europe in its day. It's called the Solar Campus now and has numerous uses."

The building now known as Solar Campus was the first building in the world to be heated entirely by solar energy, according to Historic England records.

It was built in 1961 to a design by assistant borough architect Emslie Morgan.

The Solar Campus site is now home to the Safer Wirral Hub, council youth services staff and part of the building is the Emslie Morgan Academy.

It is also used for training by Tranmere Rovers.

St James School, New Brighton

The school became The Tavern nightclub later known as The Tav, which closed and is now a housing development.

St Joseph's, Wallasey

The school on Borough Road is now a church.

Wallasey Boys Central School

The school later moved to Mosslands Drive and became The Mosslands School.

Wallasey Grammar School

It's still there - but the building on Withens Lane later became Withensfield School and today is Liscard Primary School.

Wallasey historian Tony Franks-Buckley said: "Wallasey Grammar School was built on land which had been purchased from the Navy League.

"It opened on 14th January, 1911, replacing the older building which had stood on the "flag field" and which became the cricket pitch."

Weatherhead High School, New Brighton

Emma Louise Kenchington said: "Went to the old Weatherhead High School when it was on its previous three sites on Mount Pleasant Road and Coronation Avenue! Memories."

Sue Carlisle said: "Weatherhead Mount Pleasant Road in New Brighton and Moreton Middle on Teeds Lane, Moreton."

Wirral Met College, Withens Lane campus

Wirral Met College had a presence in Wallasey for many years on Withens Lane.

There was a huge outcry when the closure of the college was proposed in 1996. Despite calls by Wallasey MP Angela Eagle and campaigners for a ministerial review, it closed in 1997 and the building was later demolished. The land is now a housing estate.

Another campus on Borough Road, Birkenhead, including the Glenda Jackson Theatre, was also demolished and housing built on the site.

Wirral Met now has four campuses in Conway Park, Birkenhead, Twelve Quays, The Oval and Wirral Waters. Now for schools from the rest of Merseyside:

Notre Dame, Everton Valley

Chris Stott-Yates said: "Notre Dame Everton Valley - so wanted to go in and look around before it closed but we weren’t allowed."

Rosa Doran said: "Notre Dame High School Everton Valley - St Johns infant school and St Johns Girls School off Walton Road."

Cathy Dunne said: "Notre Dame High School Everton Valley - fabulous building, was a tragedy to get demolished."

Lauren Roberts said: "Yes Notre Dame, drove past last week looks mad with the houses there."

Holly Lodge, West Derby

Kazz Jones said: "The old Holly Lodge! The buildings were stunning. It’s gone now and they built new houses and a new school there instead."

Linda Boden said: "Sadly primary and secondary, both gone. Corinthian Avene and Holly Lodge."

Daisy Buckley-Tynan said: "Holly Lodge, it's been re-built but all the old Victorian buildings including the main entrance one have been demolished. Both me and my mum went to this school."

Gateacre Comprehensive, Gateacre

Danielle Louise Lean said: "Went to Gateacre Comp when it was on Grange Lane. Used to have its own swimming pool."

Mandy Jim said: "Gateacre Comp, Grange Lane, Gateacre. Now housing estate."

St Francis of Assisi, Garston

Nuala Kranas said: "All my schools and college have been demolished. St Francis of Assisi in Garston, La Sagesse in Grassendale and Mabel Fletcher's Tech. Loved Mabel's!"

Susan Plummer said: "St Francis of Assisi in Garston - great school."

Mabel Fletcher Technical College, Wavertree

Sue Lovelady said: "Maidford County Primary, Yew Tree Comp and Mabel Fletcher Technical College, all replaced with housing estates."

Debs O'Donnell said: "Stanley Park in Anfield and Mabel Fletcher College in Wavertree."

Ruffwood Comprehensive in Kirkby

Laura Hall said: "All mine have gone.... Stalisfield Nursery by the Strand, the old Ranworth Square Primary, Ruffwood in Kirkby and Roby College in Huyton. Been knocked down and either built again or built over."

Garry Williams said: "Ruffwood Comprehensive School (Kirkby) which had its on swimming pool. It was next to the land that used to be St Kevin’s RC boys school.

"Ruffwood was pulled down and a new school built on the same land and called All Saints Catholic High School of which was originally on the site of the Old St Gregory’s Catholic Girls School on Bewley Drive. All a little bit confusing."

He added: "Kirkby had three secondary schools when I was a kid and now they have two. Brookfield, which I almost went to, is now Kirkby High. I think."

Hayley Louise O'Brien said: "Mosscroft in Huyton has had a name change and the infants and nursery half of it no longer part of the school. A doctors got built on its playing fields too. And Ruffwood in Kirkby now knocked down and replaced with a new school!"

Roby Comprehensive, Huyton

Tracy Barrett said: "I went to Roby Comprehensive, Rupert Road, Huyton. Good school years - now it’s been knocked down and has a new house estate built on it."

Lisa Owens sai: "Yes Roby Comp - flattened to use as a housing estate and Page Moss Comp same."

St Dominic's, Huyton

Stephanie Brady said: "St Dominics, Huyton, got knocked down to build a new junior school now called Hope Primary."

Ryebank Prep School, Broadgreen

Michelle Gibson: "I went to Ryebank Prep School in Broadgreen knocked it down to build the fly over."

St Joan of Arc, Bootle

Mike Brabin said: "St Joan of Arc in Bootle - knocked down."

Sharon Davidson said: "Yeah St Joan of Arc, Bootle and St Augustine, Bootle."

Sir Thomas Becket, Huyton

Suzanne OBrien said: "St Thomas Becket in Huyton. It's now the swimming baths."

St Michael's, Kirkby

Betty O'brien said: "St Michael's, Richard Hesketh Drive, Kirkby."

St Matthew's RC Secondary Modern, Walton

Ann Mcgorian said: "St Matthews. Richard Kelly Drive."

Southmead Primary School, Whiston

Sarah Garcia said: "Southmead Primary School, now a children's centre in Whiston. Higherside Comprehensive demolished and St Edmund Arrowsmith built in its place in Whiston."
