A scrambler bike crash that left a man with serious head injuries has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
A male driving down Breck Road, Anfield on a scrambler bike crashed into a phone box at around 3.30pm on Thursday (August 18). Merseyside Police said that it was patrolling the area at the time and officers spotted the bike as it was driving the road.
Paramedics were called and the injured male was taken to hospital at around 4.40pm. Onlookers on Breck Road described how they heard "cries for help" following the incident and said "the lad had flipped off his bike".

A police cordon was put in place immediately, closing parts of Breck Road, Agate Street and Fowler Street. Crowds were seen "shouting at police" after the crash.
The incident was referred to the IOPC on Friday (August 19), with a Merseyside Police spokesperson telling the ECHO that this was because "the injury followed recent police contact." An IOPC spokesperson told the ECHO : "We have now received a referral from Merseyside Police about the incident. We are assessing the available information to determine if any further action is required."
The Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "At around 3.30pm yesterday, Thursday 18 August police were patrolling the area around Breck Road, Anfield.
"Officers sighted a male travelling down Breck Road on a scrambler bike, which was subsequently in collision with a telephone kiosk on the pavement.
"An ambulance attended and the man was taken to hospital to be treated for serious but not life-threatening injuries.
"The incident was referred by Merseyside Police to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as the injury followed recent police contact.
"A cordon was in place on Breck Road while emergency services dealt with and investigated the incident.
"We would like to thank the community for their patience whilst the road closure was in place and the matter was investigated.
