A serving Merseyside Police officer could face the end of his career after being accused of deliberately injuring himself to fake evidence.
The officer, PC Danny McCrystal, is due to face a misconduct hearing next week before an independent panel which will decide whether the allegations are true and then what punishment he would face.
According to a notice on the Merseyside Police website, PC McCrystal caused the injury to himself to create photographic evidence which he hoped would support a criminal prosecution.

The notice states: "Constable 7980 McCrystal will appear before the Hearing for breaching the Standards of Professional Behaviour, namely, Honesty & Integrity: In that they acted dishonestly and without integrity by deliberately injuring themselves to submit photographic evidence to support a prosecution.
"Duties & Responsibility: In that, by fabricating the photographic evidence as set out above, they have not acted diligently in the execution of your duties.
"Discreditable Conduct: In that by injuring themselves deliberately and then photographing the injury and submitting is as evidence in a criminal matter they have brought the Police Service into disrepute."
The misconduct hearing is due to last four days and will take place at Merseyside Police HQ on Rose Hill, Cazneau Street, in the city centre.
