Merseyside area has some of the worst drivers in the country

One Merseyside area has the worst drivers in the country according to new statistics.

L24, covering parts of Speke and Hale is reported to have the worst drivers in the United Kingdom, with more than 15% of driving licence holders in the postcode having penalty points on their licence.

The research comes from Collingswood Insurance Services which has used the latest DVLA data on registered licence holders per postcode area and compared it with data on the total number of penalty points per postcode area. All ten of the worst postcodes for drivers with penalty points are split between Merseyside and Yorkshire, with Merseyside being home to first and sixth on the list.

Drivers in L24, an area south-east of Merseyside which includes Speke and Hale, were revealed to be the most penalised in the country. Around one in seven drivers (15.2%) here have at least one penalty point on their licence, which is three times the national average (5%).

L28 which includes Stockbridge Village also appears in the top ten, with 13.8% of licence holders here having one or more penalty points. Bradford managed to take up half of the top ten, with three other postcodes being in the surrounding areas of West Yorkshire.

The top ten are as follows:

  1. L24 - Speke and Hale - 15.2% of Licence Holders with Penalty Points

  2. BD3 - Brdaford - 14.5% of Licence Holders with Penalty Points

  3. LS9 - East Leeds - 14.3% of Licence Holders with Penalty Points

  4. WF13 - Wakefield - 14.05% of Licence Holders with Penalty Points

  5. BD1 - Bradford - 14% of Licence Holders with Penalty Points

  6. L28 - Liverpool and East Merseyside - 13.8% of Licence Holders with Penalty Points

  7. BD9 - Bradford - 13.6% of Licence Holders with Penalty Points

  8. LS12 - South West Leeds - 13.3%

  9. BD4 - Bradford - 13.2% of Licence Holders with Penalty Points

  10. BD5 - Brdaford - 13.19% of Licence Holders with Penalty Points

Liz Laidler, Head of Learner Driver Products at Collingwood Insurance Services UK Ltd, said: “It is certainly interesting to see how postcode areas can have such differing outcomes in terms of penalty points and the number of learner drivers, yet the fact remains that every single road user is vulnerable to an accident whenever they get behind the wheel.

“Even drivers who have done well to find themselves without any penalty points on their licence have to be vigilant at all times, and that includes having a suitable insurance product to ensure that you are protected against anything that happens on the road.”
