Merseyrail trains cancelled as car hits train bridge

Merseyrail trains have been cancelled after a car crashed into a railway bridge in Liverpool.

The travel provider posted on social media just after 2pm on Tuesday, May 9, to tell passengers trains would be cancelled on the Southport line. At least five trains including the 2.47pm, 3pm, 3.12pm, 4.06pm and 4.21pm services, have already been cancelled.

Merseyrail has requested a rail replacement bus service to run between Sandhills and Bootle New Strand in the meantime. Pictures from the railway bridge on Merton Road, Bootle, show Network Rail employees working on the bridge.

A small cordon is also in place on the pavement.

A spokesperson from Merseyrail said: "Due to a road vehicle hitting a bridge in the Bootle area, there are no train services between Sandhills and Bootle New Strand. Buses have been requested to run between the two stations."
