Merseyrail passengers met with chaos as power failure stops trains into Liverpool

Passengers on Merseyrail's Wirral Line were met with chaos on Friday (June 24) morning.

Power supply issues between Hamilton Square and Liverpool have caused disruption on all Wirral Line services. Issues shortly after 7am meant trains were unable to travel into Liverpool.

As a result, New Brighton and West Kirby services will now start and terminate at Birkenhead North. Chester and Ellesmere Port services will start and terminate at Birkenhead Central.

Merseyrail stated at 7.15am that a rail replacement bus service has been requested but is not yet in operation. The operator has apologised for any inconvenience caused, and said it expects the issue to be fixed by 9.15am.

Services are meant to be running across the Merseyrail network today, as it not a day affected by rail strikes. The Northern Line is running as normal this morning.

A spokesperson for Merseyrail: "Due to an electrical fault in the James St area, services are currently suspended between Birkenhead stations and James St stations. A rail replacement bus service is operation between Birkenhead North/Birkenhead Central stations and Moorfields station in both directions.

"Network Rail engineers are on site working to resolve this issue. Further updates will be provided via Merseyrail's Twitter channel (@merseyrail) in due course."
