Merseyrail issues train timetable update after staff shortages

Merseyrail has issued an update to its train timetable after staff shortages brought on as a result of covid.

The train company was impacted by the Omicron variant resulting in a reduction to a 30-minute timetable across its services.

However, Merseyrail has said it is now able to provide more services across the region due to an increase in staff availability from Monday, February 14.

Currently the 30-minute timetable will run from the start to the end of service on all lines and the temporary timetable will be in place on Mondays to Saturdays. Sunday timetables will not change.

But from Monday, February 14, the train timetable will update in the following ways:

  • Southport and Hunts Cross lines - Trains will run every 20 minutes from the start to the end of service.
  • Ormskirk and Kirkby lines - Trains will run every 20 minutes until 8pm, then every 30 minutes until the end of service.
  • West Kirby and New Brighton lines - Trains will run every 20 minutes until 7pm, then every 30 minutes until the end of service.
  • Chester line - Trains will run every 15 minutes from 7am until 7pm. They will run every 30 minutes before 7am and after 7pm until the end of service.
  • Ellesmere Port line - Trains will continue to run every 30 minutes from the start to the end of service.

A spokesperson for Merseyrail said: "Due to an increase in staff availability, Merseyrail services will increase from Monday, February 14.

"Staffing numbers were impacted by the COVID Omicron variant resulting in a reduction to a 30-minute timetable, but we are now able to provide more services across the Liverpool City Region.

"We encourage passengers to continue to wear face coverings whilst travelling on our network out of respect for others (unless exempt)."
