Merseyrail issue update over reduced service ahead of Plan B lifting

Merseyrail confirmed today they would continue to operate a reduced service for the foreseeable future.

The rail operator said it has been hit hard by the affects of the omicron variant and will continue to run a reduced timetable because of staff absences.

The Merseyrail network has been reduced to a 30 minute service across all lines since January 17.

And today a Merseyrail spokesperson confirmed to the ECHO they haven't set a date for services to return back to a normal timetable due to staff availability.

Merseyrail said it is hoped the measures will help to avoid last minute cancellations and give passengers time to adjust their travel plans where needed.

With the lifting of Plan B restrictions from next week commuters have asked what the rail operator's service will be looking like.

On Wednesday, January 19, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his plans for the removal of Plan B restrictions and said that the guidance surrounding working from home would end.

But commuters in Merseyside have expressed concern over the timetable with the rise of travellers set to increase from next week.

One person wrote on Twitter: "Now the government have announced an immediate end to working from home, there will be an inevitable rapid rise of passenger numbers on our trains. Do we know how Merseyrail plan to manage this safely and effectively in light of their current reduced services?"

Another commuter wrote: "When are the trains going back to normal times ! It’s a joke, huge queue to get tickets trains that full they can’t move. It’s like a Covid breading ground! Sort it out."

And another added: "With case numbers dropping, and the restrictions being lifted, more people likely to be travelling into work on your services; can you please give an update of when services will return to normal?"

Merseyrail told the ECHO the reduced service was because of staff availability.

Other restrictions set to be lifted include the end of compulsory mask-wearing on public transport and in shops.

The rail operator has previously said all customers must wear a face covering both within stations and on trains unless they are medically except - and fines might apply.

Merseyrail confirmed to the ECHO they are currently working through the Plan B announcement and will be publishing further travel advice about mask wearing soon.
