Merseyrail and Merseytravel jobs you can apply for right now

Jobs working across the Liverpool City Region's transport network are currently available.

Merseytravel is the Liverpool City Region's (LCR) executive body for transport. Also the LCR's delivery arm for public transport, it "provides professional, strategic and operational transport advice" to the Combined Authority and maintains the Mersey Ferries and Mersey Tunnels.

Merseyrail operates trains on three different lines across the region. Earlier this month, it was named the best performing regional rail operator for the fourth year running.

It is currently operating a reduced service, which has been the case for some time due to the covid pandemic, while a new state-of-the-art fleet of trains are expected to be introduced onto the network later this year. It is currently advertising a number of roles across various aspects of its operation.

Ranging from an apprenticeship to management roles, there is a diverse range of jobs currently on offer across the two organisations. Below, we list the jobs currently available at Merseyrail and Merseytravel.

Operation Training Manager at Merseyrail

Contract: Permanent, full-time

Salary: Circa £62,000 per year

Closing date: March 28

The job description states that the role will include the following responsibilities:

  • Design, deliver and update appropriate training programmes to Drivers, Trainee Drivers, Guards and other Operations staff as deemed appropriate by the Head of Trains
  • Evaluation of all training and development activities carried out in order to ensure compliance and continuous development of courses in line with industry best practice.
  • Support the delivery of the new 777 fleet onto the network and play a key part in the design, delivery and documentation of all associated training.
  • Liaise closely with Line Managers and Instructors to ensure that all aspects of the training is consistent and supports the effective learning of all trainees.
  • Responsible for the collation/ production and delivery of Signal Safety Brief
  • Assist assessors when necessary and if appropriate in the assessment of operations staff, as defined by the Head of Trains
  • Deputise for the Operations Manager when required

Candidates must have at least four years experience, hold train driver competency, good people management skills, strong organisational, prioritisation, problem solving, and influencing skills are also necessary, together with a high standard of literacy and IT skill.

Senior Buyer - Procurement at Merseyrail

Contract: Permanent, full-time

Salary: Not disclosed - ‘competitive’

Closing date: March 31

The job description reads: "The successful candidate's primary focus will be to deliver high value tenders subject to the Utility Contract Regulations; working with stakeholders to optimise strategic contracts and to maximise operational and commercial benefits to support our savings targets, alongside supporting the procurement team with day-to-day activities.

"The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate previous procurement experience subject to either the Utilities Contract Regulations or Public Contract Regulations, be MCIPS qualified or working towards an MCIPS qualification and have excellent IT skills including a sound knowledge of Microsoft Office applications."

Finance Apprentice at Merseyrail

Contract: Full-time

Salary: £18,000 per year

Closing date: March 23

The job description reads: “The purpose of the job is to provide support to the Finance Business Partner team and the wider Finance team in order to gain exposure to all aspects of the Finance function, applying skills developed through the study of a professional accounting qualification”.

The following skills are required:

  • Strong IT skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Educated to GCSE standard or equivalent with a good standard of Maths and English (C-A*).

Principal Officer – Mechanical Engineering at Merseytravel

Contract: 35 hours per week

Salary: £36,953 - £40,384 per year

The job description reads: "This is an exciting opportunity for a Principal Mechanical Officer to manage some of the world’s most recognisable assets like the Mersey Tunnels and Mersey Ferries. You will supervise a small professional team which will deliver an effective and efficient mechanical systems maintenance function and a long-term Capital investment programme across the Mersey Tunnels, Mersey Ferries, Headquarters building and bus stations across the Liverpool City Region.

"The post holder will liaise with internal client departments to ensure that expectations of service delivery are maintained and improved upon. The post holder will also ensure Merseytravel, its management and employees are in compliance with the rules and regulations of regulatory and statutory agencies, and that Merseytravel environmental and safety policies and procedures are being followed.

"Benefits include a local government pension scheme, a generous holiday entitlement and flexible working hours."
