Mersey girl celebrates England selection after double national boxing success

A Wirral schoolgirl has been selected to represent England in the upcoming European Schools Boxing Championships in Slovenia.

Letitia McKee, a year 8 pupil at St John Plessington High School on the Wirral, will box for her nation later this month in Maribor after coming through a tough selection process.

Letitia, who boxes for the Birkenhead Venture Boxing Club, is no stranger to success after winning the England Boxing National Schools title for the second year running last year.

The young schoolgirl is one of three national champions at her club after Leon Burns Jnr and Jess Bethel also won titles at their respective weights. She was the only person from the Merseyside and Cheshire regions to be selected and one of only fifteen nationally selected to represent her county.

"We are all extremely proud of Letitia, as she has worked tirelessly for years now," Sean Trodden, head coach at Birkenhead Venture Boxing Club, told the ECHO.

"She has now gotten what she fully deserves, and we hope she can now go on to medal, competing with the best in Europe."

While Letitia’s dad, Kenny, who is also a coach at Birkenhead Venture Boxing Club, said: "We are not only close knit as a family but also as a club, and we have all worked very hard towards this."

The best European boxers at ages 13 and 14 will compete in Maribor from August 15–26. This is going to be the very first time that Slovenia will be the organiser of a European Boxing Championships.
